The end of the Earth

The end of the Earth is not in sight, but images of the death of a remote solar system give a sense of what that apocalypse could look like. The space mission Kepler 2 has recorded the destruction of a solar system for the first time. The images show the remnants of a dismembered planet orbiting a so-called dead star or white dwarf in the constellation Virgo, some 570 light-years from Earth.
